1st Malaysian Conference on Healthy Ageing

Introduction
The conference, organised by Universiti Putra Malaysia in collaboration with National Population and Family Development Board, Malaysia
March 8th to 10th 2002
Hotel Sheraton, Subang
 
A total of 307 participants attended the two and half day conference. The Conference was officially opened by the Minister of Women and Family Development Malaysia, Dato’ Shahrizat Abdul Jalil. There were three conference rooms occupied for the first two days with programmes running concurrently.

Summary of Programme
The topics covered in the twelve symposiums of the Conference were quite comprehensive and hosted by experienced and well known speakers:
Symposium 1: ‘Coping Strategies in the Aged’
Symposium 2: ‘Anesthesia, Surgery & the Elderly’
Symposium 3: ‘Nutrition in the Elderly’
Symposium 4: ‘Sexuality in the Elderly’
Symposium 5: ‘Hormones in the Elderly’
Symposium 6: ‘Memory and Ageing’
Symposium 7: ‘Managing Osteoporosis’
Symposium 8: ‘Planning for your Future’
Symposium 9: ‘Preventive Geriatrics’
Symposium 10: ‘Mobility in the Elderly’
Symposium 11: ‘Alternative Medicine’
Symposium 12: ‘Management of Stroke’
 
The overall response was very good. It was the committee decision to ensure that this first symposium be held for the benefit of UPM and its Faculty. As this was the first organised symposium on Healthy Aging, the response from both academicians and the public was unexpected.

Conclusion
Many of the local and foreign speakers congratulated the Committee on the smooth running of the Conference. The participants expressed satisfaction at the variety of topics covered and about 40 of them actually signed up for any follow up seminars or talks on Healthy Ageing. The Conference was successful in generating an interest and focus on wellness and healthy ageing. It is recommended to have follow up programmes and seminars.
